Athletics Make Several Roster Moves

Image
The A’s selected the contracts of left-hander Sam Selman and right-hander Parker Markel from Triple-A today.  Right-hander Daulton Jefferies and outfielder Skye Bolt were each moved to the 60-day injured list to create space on the 40-man roster.  Oakland also called up right-hander Domingo Tapia, while right-hander Jacob Lemoine and southpaws Adam Kolarek and Zach Logue were all optioned to Triple-A to make way for Selman, Markel, and Tapia on the active roster. Markel signed a minor league deal with the Athletics in March, and the 31-year-old righty is now on pace to make his first MLB appearance since 2019.  All 22 of Markel’s career Major League innings came in that season, with Markel taking the hill for the Mariners and Pirates and posting a 7.77 ERA. Cristiano Ronaldo dropped against Spain for ‘tactical’ reasons — Fernando Santos

Portugal manager Fernando Santos has defended his decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for the country’s draw with Spain, saying: “It was better to use the players that I used.” Portugal and Spain drew 1-1 in their Nations League clash on Thursday night. Spain’s Alvaro Morata scored the opener, only for Braga’s Ricardo Horta to score the equalising goal on his first Portugal appearance in almost eight years. Santos elected to drop Ronaldo from his starting eleven, with Portugal’s record goal-scorer only introduced midway through the second half. “Cristiano Ronaldo? They often ask why he is a starter. It’s the million-dollar question,” Santos said after Thursday’s result, as per Reuters. “I understood that for this game it was better to use the players I used.” Santos added that it was a tactical decision to drop Ronaldo for the match. “It was a technical and tactical option for this game,” he said. “It seemed to us the best solution. For the way we wanted to play and approach the game

Juventus are increasingly confident they are in the final stages of completing a three-year deal for Paul Pogba, which will put him in their bracket of highest earners.  Sky Sports News has been told the Serie A side have been given verbal assurances that the midfielder will rejoin them following his exit from Manchester United as a free agent. Negotiations have progressed smoothly with Rafaela Pimenta, who has been representing Pobga since Mino Raiola's passing. She has served as a lawyer at the late agent's firm for close to two decades and is assessing requested tweaks to the contract on offer ahead of a closing meeting. Beyond what Juve feel would be an inconceivable change of heart from Pogba, the club are optimistic all formalities will be completed soon despite Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid engaging in dialogue with his camp.
